Why should one not use brush for cleansing teeth? and Why are new clothes worn on an auspiscious day?

Why should one not use brush for cleansing teeth?

1. Dantadhawan (Act of cleansing the teeth)

Today, most people use tooth-powder or paste made of Ayurvedic herbs and various toothpastes made of chemicals.
Result of using Ayurvedic paste for Dantadhawan: The paste made of Ayurvedic herbs is related to the Tej and Apa-tattva (Absolute Fire and Water Principles) to a small extent. By using this paste for Dantadhawan, the subtle foul smell of the teeth disintegrates. The frequencies of Apa-tattva emitted by the paste awaken the vitality of the oral cavity. Because of an awakened oral cavity, obstacles in chewing the food are removed. The spots in the mouth that emit the foul air are weakened.
Result of using chemical toothpastes for Dantadhawan: The chemical toothpaste is related to the Pruthvi and Apa-tattva (Absolute Earth and Water Principles). Its use creates an artificial fragrance in the mouth. The foul smell generated by the decomposition of food particles wedged in the teeth is subdued for some time and there is a good feeling for some time.
Result of using Ayurvedic toothpowder for Dantadhawan: The Ayurvedic toothpowder is related to the Tej and Apa-tattva (Absolute Fire and Water Principles) to a medium extent. That is why, the foul smell emanating from the mouth is destroyed. The longevity of the gap in the teeth increases. The vitality of the mouth remains awakened and the mouth feels light.

In addition to above, by using Ayurvedic materials, there is a reduction in occurrence of snoring and the mouth remaining open while sleeping.

2. Appropriate procedure for Dantadhawan

·         Sit or stand at one place for Dantadhawan.
·         Use the forefinger for Dantadhawan on the external area of the teeth. If it is not possible to use the forefinger, use the middle or the little finger.
·         Use the thumb for Dantadhawan on the internal surface of the teeth.
Reason for sitting or standing in one place while doing Dantadhawan: In the act of Dantadhawan, while sitting or standing in one place, the teeth get massaged in an appropriate manner and thus get cleansed.

3. Why one may avoid use brush for Dantadhawan?

·         With the use of a brush for Dantadhawan, the teeth get cleansed at the gross level in less time; however from the subtle viewpoint they remain unclean.
·         The bristles of a toothbrush are made of synthetic material. These bristles emit Raja-Tama particles. As a result, a covering of Raja-Tama frequencies is created around the gums and the teeth. The air space in the mouth also gets polluted. Friction caused by the brushing may result in emission of distressing vibrations. These distressing vibrations form a covering on the teeth and manifest in the dental cavities. The gums bleed due to the friction caused by the brushing. Taking undue advantage of this, the negative energies may attack. This may result in an increase in the biting of the lips out of anger.
·         The effect of brushing the teeth lasts for only 5 minutes

4. Spiritual science underlying performing Dantadhawan with the fingers

Using a brush is not good for the gums. When compared with the inanimate brush, the animate fingers are more compatible with the body. The energy of the body is emitted through the fingertips. The gums are charged with this energy. Thus, the gums and the teeth derive the benefit of the sattvikta and are cleansed both at the gross and the subtle level. At the same time, the pressure of the fingers massages the gums and they remain healthy.
It is more important to take care of the Apa-tattva (Absolute Water Principle) predominant gums, than the Pruthvi-tattva (Absolute Earth Principle) predominant teeth. Hence, performing Dantadhawan with the fingers is more beneficial, when compared to using a brush.
Spiritual experience of a seeker, on using the fingers for Dantadhawan: Earlier I used to brush my teeth daily. When I got to know that it is more beneficial to use the fingers for Dantadhavan, I experimented on it. As a result, I experienced that the energy emitted through the fingers had a more and lasting effect on the teeth. - Ms. Priyanka Lotlikar from Ramnathi, Goa.
Listening to this spiritual experience convinces us about the benefits of Acharpalan. It also highlights the greatness of Sanatan culture and Hindu Dharma that has propounded appropriate Achars, which can be easily adopted by common man in day-to-day life.

Why are new clothes worn on an auspiscious day?

1. Auspicious beginning to wearing of new clothes

The scriptures have stated specific actions on the perspective of a person while wearing new clothes and how to derive benefit at the spiritual level.
·         An auspicious beginning to wearing of new clothes should be done on festivals.
·         New clothes should be worn after placing them in front of the Deities.
·         Before wearing new clothes, offering them to others to wear.

1.1 Reasons for auspicious beginning to wearing of new clothes on a particular day

On specific days like the festivals, the Principles of specific Deities descend onto the earth and are active in a higher proportion. By wearing new clothes on such days, the clothes absorb the frequencies of the Principles of the Deities and become Sattvik. The subtle-bodies of a person are purified by these frequencies and he also becomes capable of absorbing them. He also benefits from such Sattvik clothes all around the year.

1.2 Underlying science in placing new clothes in front of the Deities before wearing them

When we first offer each object to God and then accept it as His Prasad, we get the benefit of the Chaitanya present in it.

1.3 Underlying science in offering new clothes to others to wear first

Hindu Dharma teaches how to live a life devoid of attachment and associated with Brahman. Through actions like wearing of new clothes, attachment towards the clothes can be created in a person’s mind. To prevent this, the scriptures have advocated that new clothes be offered first to someone else to wear. Offering the clothes first to someone else to wear amounts to worshipping the Deity’s Principle in him and then wearing them considering them to be a Prasad of the Deity.
Whom to give and whom not to give the clothes to wear first?: New clothes should not be given first to a person who is severely distressed by negative energies. When such a person wears the clothes, distressing frequencies are absorbed and accumulated in the clothes. After this, when a person wears the same clothes, he can be distressed by these frequencies. As against this, by giving the Sattvik new clothes to a spiritually evolved person to wear first, provides the benefit of Sattvikta through the clothes.
As stated earlier, it is more beneficial to keep the new clothes in front a Deity, praying for obtaining Chaitanya through the clothes and then wearing them.

1.4 Underlying science in washing brand new clothes, before using them

During its production, a cloth goes through many hands. As a result, the ability of the clothes to absorb Sattvik frequencies is less. When they are kept in a shop for sale, the clothes are touched by many. This may increase the possibility of attack of negative energies. As a result, there is a possibility of the person suffering distress. Hence, we should wash the new clothes before wearing them. Washing the new clothes enhances their ability to absorb the Sattvik frequencies and make them free flowing.

2. Effects of wearing used clothes

According to the Vishnusmruti, used clothes must not be worn without washing them. Wearing soiled clothes increases the possibility of the body suffering from various diseases and the mind being afflicted with Asattvik thoughts. Contact with washed clothes helps increase the Sattva in the body and the person progresses towards the spiritual aim.

2.1 Effects of wearing unwashed and washed cotton clothes

A sheath of the person’s Raja-Tama predominant thoughts and the Raja-Tama frequencies present in the external atmosphere is created on the cotton clothes used by him. Wearing such clothes increases the possibility of distress due to negative energies. However, washing used cotton clothes destroys the sheath of the Raja-Tama frequencies on them.

2.3 Effects of wearing unwashed clothes

·         Black covering is created around the clothes.
·         Raja-Tama predominant thorny particles spread through the body of the person wearing unwashed clothes.
·         The clothes emit black frequencies.
·         Pessimistic thoughts arise in the mind of the person and he feels depressed.
·         Raja-Tama particles spread in the environment.
·         Negative energies may get attracted towards the person in the form of odour and complex bonds are created around him.

2.4 Effects of wearing washed clothes

·         Shakti and Chaitanya particles spread in the body of the person wearing washed clothes.
·         The black sheath around the mind and the intellect of the person is removed and he feels cheerful.
·         Sattvik thoughts arise in his mind.
·         A protective sheath of Chaitanya is created around the body of the person.
·         Negative energies move away from the person.

2.5 Effects of wearing unwashed clothes with perfume sprayed on them

·         Spraying perfumes makes the clothes fragrant only at a gross level; at the subtle level, however, the Raja-Tama frequencies present in them are not destroyed.
·         Raja-Tama frequencies are attracted towards artificial fragrance. These frequencies spread in the person’s body and clothes and destroy the Sattvikta present there.
Hence, the attacks by negative energies may be more on the person wearing perfumes.
